A game changer for renewables

In 2019, Alfa Laval become an investor and partner to Malta Inc., developing a new solution with the potential to revolutionize grid-scale energy storage. The start-up is a spinoff of Google’s X incubator, with backers that include the likes of Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos. Malta’s electro-thermal system can store energy from any source – including renewable sources like wind and solar power – in any location for up to several days. Alfa Laval’s innovative heat transfer technology is a critical component for making it possible.

“We believe that thermal storage will play an important role in the energy transition,” says Susanne Pahlén Åklundh, President of Alfa Laval’s Energy Division. “After working with the Malta team for the past two years on novel heat exchanger design and development, we remain excited about this solution and the potential impact it can have on climate change. With collaborations like this we can reach further, expand the technical borders and create more sustainable solutions for the future.”

“Alfa Laval has been a terrific partner to Malta, from the founding of the company in 2018, and we look forward to continuing the great work that will help bring this solution to market.” says Ramya Swaminathan, CEO of Malta Inc.

Circular solutions to turn waste into value

Alfa Laval has brought its expertise in mechanical and thermal separation to a partnership with EasyMining. Part of the Swedish Ragn-Sells Group, EasyMining is an innovation company dedicated to enabling new circular solutions. With Alfa Laval’s support, they are making it possible to extract phosphorus from incinerated waste sludge and other resources from waste streams – creating new value chains for waste materials.

“With these processes it will be possible to transform waste into valuable products again, which is a key step in building a more sustainable society,” says Susanne Pahlén Åklundh, President of Alfa Laval’s Energy Division.

“With Alfa Laval, we see the possibility of speeding up the development and commercialization of our processes, which is important for innovation companies,” says Jan Svärd, CEO of EasyMining.

A pioneering partnership from two sustainability leaders

Alfa Laval and Stena Recycling have teamed up create a smart, sustainable and easy-to-use solution for improving circularity in our industry. Called Re-Made to matter, this new exchange programme will make it possible to recover as much as 100% of the valuable metals found in old heat exchangers. By replacing them with more modern designs, we can also enable efficiency improvements for energy savings as well as a reduced carbon footprint.

A partnership for renewable clean fuel production

In 2021, Alfa Laval became an investor and partner to Liquid Wind, a Power-to-Fuel company that is developing commercial-scale eMethanol facilities. Each facility captures and concentrates biogenic carbon dioxide emissions from industry, combining them with hydrogen made from renewable electricity and water. The result is the production of green methanol. Joining Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy and Haldor Topsoe, Alfa Laval contributes to this unique consortium with heat transfer expertise to improve the process efficiency and the overall energy integration of the facilities.

"This is an important partnership, as we – together with other major players – will be part of the growing Power-to-X market, thereby driving the development of technical solutions that will have an impact on future fuel options," says Susanne Pahlén Åklundh, President of the Energy Division at Alfa Laval. "With collaborations like this, we expand the technical borders and contribute to a more sustainable society."

"We are very happy to strengthen the Liquid Wind consortium with a world-class Swedish industrial player with unparalleled experience,” says Claes Fredriksson, CEO and Founder of Liquid Wind. “Their valuable knowledge will increase efficiency and deliver additional shared value."

Partner to the 1.5°C Business playbook

Alfa Laval is a supporting partner to the “1.5°C Business Playbook,” an effort to accelerate carbon neutrality by 2030. Launched in January 2020 in Davos, Switzerland, the initiative is a spin-off of the Exponential Roadmap project. The playbook is a guide for climate strategy and action, and it aims to transform the economy by shifting business focus to zero-carbon solutions. Alfa Laval will use the playbook in its own strategy work, as well as when supporting suppliers, customers and partners in their efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

“If we agree that the world needs to shift to a carbon-neutral economy, then we must do our part in the value chain,” says Tom Erixon, President and CEO of Alfa Laval. “In Alfa Laval, we have the ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030. Reaching this goal will require partnerships. Therefore, we are pleased to support this initiative which is based on the latest science and focuses on simplicity and speed.”
